When I Began to Paint

When I Began to Paint 1991-2004 oil on canvas 45 ½”h x 53 ½”w

This is an autobiographical painting. I loved that bathing suit, and lived in it. It had monkeys all over it, lifted by balloons. I would get so tan that my Dad called me a “little Indian”, thusly the headdress. The frame was devised as I had saved paint brushes for many years, not bearing to throw them away, and thought it symbolized many years of painting. I added the busy, "monkey business” background in 2004, to represent my life and probable mental state when I was that child.
